HD Battle Shows No Signs Of Letting Up
The ongoing battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to become the preferred high definition optical disc format shows no signs of letting up.
The HD-DVD camp has released several players at about half the cost of Blu-Ray players. The Blu-Ray camp now has an entrenched line of players in the SONY PlayStation 3. We are now even starting to see players that will play both formats of discs. The quality and quantity of titles available for each format continues to grow, and at this point neither side has any incentive to try to find a compromise.
Given that the home viewer needs an HDTV to even consider either of these formats, the number of people buying high definition disc players is still very small. Both formats are plagued by bugs and other idiosyncrasies that are inherent in any new format.
Many of you remember the incompatibilities with different brands of CD-R when burners first became available. That's just the price you pay for being an early adopter, but the uncertainty and confusion in the marketplace is leaving many buyers sitting on the sidelines with the idea that current DVD technology looks pretty good on their 4:3 NTSC tube set. It's hard to blame them for not rushing out to spend thousands of dollars on new gear.
We are carefully analyzing the market and when the time comes for your high definition project we'll be ready for you.
