Action Duplication Offers Dynamic Printing Options for CD and DVD Discs

Action Duplication offers four processes for printing labels on CDs and DVDs. The best method to use on your project depends on the quantity of discs ordered, the turnaround time, the number of colors in the artwork, and the budget for the project. Outlined below are descriptions of the four processes.

On-Disc Digital Printing

Action Duplication is one of the few companies in the world employing On-Disc Digital Printing. This new technology allows photo-quality (600 dpi) images to be printed on CD?s and DVD?s. The resolution is much higher than silk-screen printing, and the process uniquely allows for the customization of the discs with variable data. Each disc can be customized with information such as names, addresses, and serial numbers. The ability to personalize optical discs creates many new uses for the medium, such as personalized Direct Mail CD?s, Business Card CD?s, CD Concert Tickets, the serialization of secure content, and Limited Edition Collectible DVD?s. On-Disc Digital printing works by using a dry toner process to digitally print the images onto rolls of film. Then using heat and pressure, the toner is bonded onto the discs. The finished disc has a vibrant, high-gloss luster and the print can accurately match accompanying 4-color process packaging. Action Duplication includes this process at no additional charge on most DVD replication projects. For CD projects there is a small additional charge.

Silk Screen Printing

Silk Screen printing is the most common and, usually least expensive, process for disc decoration. The printing is done up to 6 colors on a high speed press. The inks can be printed on a white flood background, or directly onto the silver media. Dramatic effects can be created by designing the art so the silver shows through the art work in selected areas. Silk Screen Printing successfully reproduces 4-Color CMYK images, but looks best when used with PMS spot colors. Silk screen inks have depth and look rich when the screens are used at 100%.

Color Direct Imprint

For short run 4-Color printing, primarily onto CD-R?s, Action Duplication uses an industrial Rimage Process Color Thermal Transfer Printer. The quality of the print is very high and compares favorably with On-Disc Digital Printing with a high gloss finish. There are no setup charges when using Direct Imprint. While it is a slower printer than the ones explained above, there is minimal setup and it can still be used to produce several hundred high quality 4-Color printed discs overnight.

Black Direct Imprint

For short run 1-Color printing, we use a Rimage Thermal Transfer process. This method of printing is designed for labeling discs with text or line art graphics only. It is an efficient and inexpensive process for projects with very quick turn times. For a more detailed explanation of all these printing processes, please follow this link to Printing Options.
