Video Production Tips
A good master is one of the most critical elements in the creation of high quality dubs. There are some problems we can correct during duplication, but it is always better to provide us with a master that represents the way you want the dubs to look.
If possible, please format your master in the following way:
- One minute of bars and tone; 75%, SMPTE, 1 volt P-P, 0 VU, tone on both channels
- Identification slate, if desired
- 15 seconds of black
- Program
- At least 30 seconds of black after program
You should indicate the audio setup on the master: single channel only, two channel mono, stereo or unmixed.
You should also indicate any other unusual features of the program and explain how we should deal with them, such as: false openings or endings, audio preceding video, no audio, black & white programs, multiple programs or versions on master, slates within programs, no bars and tone, little or no black at end, cued master or master is not NTSC.
The standard format for our VHS dubs is to record 15 seconds of black before the program starts and at least 30 seconds of black after the program ends. We do not put bars and tone or slates on VHS dubs unless requested.
It is a good idea to provide us with a duplication master in order to prevent unnecessary wear to your original master. You should always retain the original master for safekeeping.
Remember, a good master and good communication help ensure high quality dubs.
